The 2024 World Series of Poker was a successful event, but not without controversy. To prevent future issues, a new rule for the upcoming WSOP Paradise has been implemented to restrict electronic assistance and coaching. According to Rule 63(b) of the WSOP Paradise official rulebook, players and spectators are not allowed to use charts, apps, or any form of electronic assistance in the tournament room. Spectators are also prohibited from providing live assistance or coaching. Penalties for violating this rule are undefined but can result in disqualification for the player and ejection for the spectators.
The new rule came into the spotlight after the 2024 WSOP Main Event final table, where Jonathan Tamayo emerged victorious. Tamayo, like many players at that stage of a tournament, often discussed the game with his rail between hands. His rail consisted of 2015 WSOP Main Event champ Joe McKeehen and poker pro Dominik Nitsche. However, what caused controversy was the presence of a laptop with real-time assistance (RTA) software running on Tamayo’s rail. While using RTA software is prohibited online, it raised eyebrows when seen in a live tournament setting. Despite the lack of subtlety in this incident, Tamayo and his friends did not violate any rules.
The debate surrounding electronic assistance on the rail led to discussions about how to enforce such bans effectively. Some believe it is best for the community to embrace the game’s evolution, even if some aspects are disagreeable to some. In addition to the electronic assistance rule, WSOP Paradise has also implemented restrictions on approved electronic devices. Players can still use approved devices for non-cheating purposes, but they are not allowed to be placed on the table or rail. Furthermore, all electronic devices must be removed from the table once the tournament reaches the final three tables, unlike the previous rule that only barred devices at the final table.
Overall, the new rule for WSOP Paradise aims to maintain fairness and integrity in poker tournaments by limiting electronic assistance and coaching. While controversies may arise, it is essential to uphold the rules to ensure a level playing field for all participants. As the poker community continues to evolve, adapting to new regulations and guidelines will be crucial in preserving the integrity of the game.
