A tragic incident occurred at Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore, where a Bangladeshi construction worker lost his life after an accident on the site. The Genting-owned casino resort is currently undergoing a $5 billion expansion, which includes enhancements to its aquarium where the incident took place on a Sunday.
According to reports from The Strait Times, the 44-year-old worker was killed when a steel structure collapsed at the new Singapore Oceanarium. Emergency responders arrived at the scene and pronounced him dead around 8am. Singapore’s Ministry of Manpower emphasized the importance of proper design, installation, and inspection of lifting equipment and supporting structures for safety measures. The ministry has instructed the contractor to cease work on the site, although the death is not being treated as suspicious.
In addition to the new aquarium, Resorts World Sentosa is also adding 700 hotel rooms and updating Universal Studios Singapore. The revamp will feature an immersive themed zone and Illumination’s Minion Land, set to open alongside the Oceanarium in 2025.
Singapore currently ranks as Asia’s second-largest casino destination after Macau. However, gambling advocates in the Philippines are optimistic about surpassing Singapore to claim the second spot due to the development of eight new casino projects. Unlike the Philippines, Singapore only has Resorts World and Marina Bay Sands without any plans for additional casinos.
Overall, the tragic incident at Resorts World Sentosa serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of workplace safety and proper precautions in construction sites. It is a tragic loss that highlights the risks and dangers that workers face in such environments. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the deceased worker.
