The British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) has issued a warning to users of its PlayNow online gambling platform regarding a recent hacking attempt. Hackers tried to access accounts using stolen passwords obtained from other websites. The suspicious activity was noticed on July 24, prompting programmers to confirm that it was a case of “credential stuffing.” This method involves attackers using stolen email and password combinations to gain unauthorized access to accounts on different platforms.
As a precautionary measure, BCLC has advised users to change their passwords, especially if they use the same login credentials across multiple websites. The warning is not limited to residents of British Columbia, as BCLC also operates in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. BCLC President Pat Davis expressed concern over the incident and assured users that there is no evidence of hackers accessing the PlayNow system or stealing any login information.
In response to the security breach, the operator took immediate action by locking any affected accounts, notifying the individuals involved, and blocking any further suspicious activity. The investigation into the incident is ongoing to prevent similar breaches in the future. It is essential for users to practice good password hygiene by using unique and complex passwords for each online account to enhance security and protect their personal information.
