Currently, the only forms of legal gambling in Texas are the state lottery, greyhound and horse racing, and charitable activities. However, the panelists, including representatives from FanDuel, MGM Resorts, and Las Vegas Sands, are hopeful for a change in the gambling landscape in the Lone Star State.
Andy Abboud of Las Vegas Sands expressed his confidence in the inevitability of gambling expansion in Texas, citing the company’s extensive lobbying efforts in the region. Abboud mentioned that even if legalizing casinos in Texas doesn’t happen next year, it is bound to occur in the future.
One major obstacle that the panelists highlighted is the Texas Senate, where previous casino and sports betting bills have been thwarted. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick, who has been a vocal opponent of gambling expansion, plays a crucial role in determining the fate of such legislation in the Senate.
