A recent report from Pennsylvania has highlighted a concerning increase in calls to the state’s problem gambling hotline, specifically related to online gambling. Since the US Supreme Court decision to allow states to legalize sports betting in 2018, watchdogs have been monitoring signs of potential problem gambling. The report shows a 70% year-over-year increase in support calls for online gambling in Pennsylvania, prompting calls for measures to address the issue.
The “Pennsylvania Interactive Gaming Assessment: Online Gambling Report 2023” revealed that from 2022 to 2023, calls to the 1-800-GAMBLER hotline for online gambling specifically increased by 34%. Out of a total of 2,834 calls, 974 were related to online gambling. Gillian Russell, an assistant research professor at Penn State Abington and co-author of the report, expressed growing concern for problem gambling among individuals aged 21-30 in Pennsylvania.
Despite efforts by Pennsylvania senators to curtail online gambling, such as a failed attempt to ban credit card funding for online gambling accounts, the industry continues to thrive. The state now boasts 12 sportsbooks, including popular brands like FanDuel, DraftKings, BetMGM, ESPN BET, and Caesars. Kevin O’Toole, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Gaming Control and Board, discussed the growth and potential issues in a recent interview with City and State.
O’Toole highlighted the significant contribution of new technologies to revenue growth in the gambling industry. Prior to the gambling expansion bill, Pennsylvania had 13 land-based casinos generating around $3.3 billion annually. However, after the expansion, revenue figures soared to over $5 billion within a year and a half to two years, with the current figure approaching $6 billion.
The surge in online gambling-related calls to the Pennsylvania hotline underscores the need for proactive measures to address problem gambling in the state. With the proliferation of sports betting and online gambling options, it is crucial for regulators and stakeholders to prioritize responsible gambling practices and provide support for individuals at risk of addiction.
The data from the report signals a growing trend that demands attention from policymakers, industry stakeholders, and the public. By addressing the root causes of problem gambling, implementing effective regulations, and promoting responsible gambling behavior, Pennsylvania can mitigate the risks associated with online gambling and ensure a safe and sustainable gambling environment for all residents.
