DraftKings is set to enter the online sports betting market in Washington, D.C. following the end of FanDuel’s monopoly last week. The Boston-based operator recently announced a partnership with MLS’ D.C. United, granting them market access in the nation’s capital. However, they still need to obtain a license and regulatory approvals before launching their platform.
Once DraftKings receives the green light to go live, Washington, D.C. will become the 29th jurisdiction in North America where they operate. Matt Kalish, President of DraftKings North America, expressed excitement about expanding their presence in more than half of the country. D.C. United’s President of Business Operations, Danita Johnson, welcomed the partnership and looks forward to providing a seamless experience for their fans.
Last week, FanDuel, Caesars, and BetMGM all launched their platforms in the district after the D.C. Council passed a bill ending GambetDC’s exclusive hold on districtwide online sports betting. FanDuel had taken over as the sole operator in April, but their monopoly was short-lived. In addition to DraftKings, Fanatics Betting and Gaming has also expressed interest in entering the Washington, D.C. market.
Overall, DraftKings’ entry into the Washington, D.C. online sports betting market marks a significant shift in the industry landscape following the end of FanDuel’s monopoly. With the potential for more operators to enter the market in the future, sports bettors in the nation’s capital can look forward to a broader range of options and competition in the online sports betting space.
